About this Ficus Retusa Bonsai with Banyan Roots, Trained (Ficus retusa)
Twenty-three years of growth have produced this 12 by 17 by 27 inch Ficus retusa, with banyan roots descending from the branches to meet the soil of its 12-inch brown rectangular mica container. Those descending roots thicken over time into secondary trunks, which is how the banyan character builds. The small dark leaves are rounder than those of Ficus benjamina, and the grey-to-reddish bark carries short pale horizontal flecks. It is among the easiest bonsai to keep indoors.

- Moderately dry — water generously only when the top inch of soil is slightly dry. Dislikes wet, soggy soil

- 9b–11 outdoors year-round (most reliably 10a–12); indoor elsewhere
- #1 cause of death
- Overwatering / root rot, often compounded by too little light
