About this Ficus Retusa Bonsai with Banyan Roots, Trained (Ficus retusa)
Twenty-three years of growth have produced this 12 by 17 by 27 inch Ficus retusa, with banyan roots descending from the branches to meet the soil of its 12-inch brown rectangular mica container. Those descending roots thicken over time into secondary trunks, which is how the banyan character builds. The small dark leaves are rounder than those of Ficus benjamina, and the grey-to-reddish bark carries short pale horizontal flecks. It is among the easiest bonsai to keep indoors.
Ficus bonsai care
This is a living Ficus (Ficus microcarpa). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

- Indoor tree wherever it frosts; it can summer outdoors while temperatures stay above 60°F (15°C)
- Light
- As much as possible, preferably full sun; low light brings larger leaves and leaf drop
- Water
- Water thoroughly once the surface is slightly dry; overwatering causes root rot
- USDA zones
- 12 to 13 in a pot: zone 12's winter lows of 50 to 60°F (10 to 16°C) stay at or above the 50°F (10°C) below which it does poorly, and zone 13's lows of 60 to 70°F (16 to 21°C) clear it; anywhere colder, bring it in for winter. In the ground: 9 to 11 outdoors all year; indoors anywhere colder
