About this Medium Ficus Retusa Bonsai, Curved Trunk, 8 Years Old (Ficus retusa)
8 years old and around 12 inches tall, shaped to the traditional curved-trunk form and carrying the heavy base that such work depends on. Ficus retusa also goes by Banyan Fig and Taiwan Ficus. Its leaves are small, dark green and set alternately along the stem, broader and more oval than those of the Benjamina. The bark ranges from grey to reddish and is marked with short horizontal flecks that give a faintly tiger-striped effect. It ranks among the more tolerant and versatile trees available for indoor bonsai work.
Ficus bonsai care
This is a living Ficus (Ficus microcarpa). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Indoor tree wherever it frosts; it can summer outdoors while temperatures stay above 60°F (15°C)
- Light
- As much as possible, preferably full sun; low light brings larger leaves and leaf drop
- Water
- Water thoroughly once the surface is slightly dry; overwatering causes root rot
- USDA zones
- 9 to 11 outdoors all year; indoors anywhere colder
- Main risks
- Main risks, not ranked by any source: root rot from overwatering; indoors, too little light
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Ficus bonsai care guide.
