About this Ficus in a Water Land Container Bonsai, Coiled Trunk, 6 Years Old (Ficus 'Orientalis')

This is a miniature cultivar of Ficus orientalis, 6 years old and 13 inches tall, with reduced leaves and a naturally compact habit that keeps the silhouette tight. The trunk has been worked into a coiled style, and the tree is potted in a combined land and water container, the water side lending the planting the look of a specimen standing at the edge of a pool. Ficus of this type do particularly well indoors, which makes the tree straightforward to site through the year.

Ficus bonsai care

This is a living Ficus (Ficus microcarpa). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

Indoor / outdoor
Indoor tree wherever it frosts; it can summer outdoors while temperatures stay above 60°F (15°C)
Light
As much as possible, preferably full sun; low light brings larger leaves and leaf drop
Water
Water thoroughly once the surface is slightly dry; overwatering causes root rot
USDA zones
12 to 13 in a pot: zone 12's winter lows of 50 to 60°F (10 to 16°C) stay at or above the 50°F (10°C) below which it does poorly, and zone 13's lows of 60 to 70°F (16 to 21°C) clear it; anywhere colder, bring it in for winter. In the ground: 9 to 11 outdoors all year; indoors anywhere colder
Main risks
Main risks, not ranked by any source: root rot from overwatering; indoors, too little light

Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Ficus bonsai care guide.
