About this Small Ficus Retusa Bonsai, Curved Trunk, 6 Years Old (Ficus retusa)
6 years old and standing 10 to 12 inches, this Ficus retusa has been trained into the traditional curved shape, its trunk already heavy for the height. The species, known as banyan fig or Taiwan ficus, bears small dark leaves that alternate along the stems and are more oval than those of Ficus benjamina, on bark shading from grey to reddish and dotted with short horizontal flecks. As indoor trees go it is among the more accommodating, and at this stage the branch structure is still open enough to be redirected as you please.
Ficus bonsai care
This is a living Ficus (Ficus retusa). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Indoor in any climate with frost; can summer outdoors above ~60°F (15°C)
- Light
- Bright; as much direct sun as possible. The single biggest indoor failure point
- Water
- Moderately dry: water generously only when the top inch of soil is slightly dry. Dislikes wet, soggy soil
- USDA zones
- 9b to 11 outdoors year-round (most reliably 10a to 12); indoor elsewhere
- #1 cause of death
- Overwatering / root rot, often compounded by too little light
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Ficus bonsai care guide.
