This Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' is 6 years old and stands 14 inches, trained upright against a stake so the leader runs straight rather than following the trailing habit natural to the variety. As pre-bonsai it is raw material: the height and vigour are there, while the styling remains an open question. Junipers accept wire well and hold a bend once the wood sets, so there is plenty of scope for someone who wants to design from the beginning. Like all junipers it belongs outside in open air, through the cold season as well as the warm.
