6 years of growth have given this Japanese dwarf juniper a 7- to 8-inch frame, with visible taper and branches firm enough to take wire. Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' earns its reputation honestly: hardy, long-lived, and able to shrug off conditions that would set other species back, which is part of why it suits people new to bonsai. Keep it outside all year in bright light over sharp drainage, pinching extending shoots in summer to build denser pads. The variety turned up on screen in the 2013 comedy-drama Admission, starring Tina Fey.
