3 years old and 7 to 8 inches tall, this Japanese dwarf juniper is planted in a land and water container, the tree occupying the raised soil bed while a well on the opposite side holds water in imitation of a tree growing beside a pool. Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' is the evergreen most Americans picture when they picture bonsai, and it earns that standing honestly: hardy, long-lived, and forgiving of conditions that would trouble fussier material.
