At 3 years old and standing 5 to 6 inches, this dwarf Japanese juniper is still at the stage where its habit can be shaped almost entirely by the grower. Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' has scale-like evergreen foliage carried on low, spreading branches, and its standing among American growers owes much to how forgiving it is. Grow it outdoors, where it wants generous light and a gritty, free-draining mix, and let the surface dry a little between waterings. For someone taking up the hobby, few conifers offer as much room to learn on.
