About this Juniper Bonsai, Upright, 5 Years Old (Juniperus procumbens 'Nana')

Trained as an upright rather than in the low, spreading shape the cultivar takes naturally, this 5-year-old stands 6 to 7 inches and shows a clear trunk line from soil to apex. Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' is a dwarf juniper of Japanese origin and the evergreen most closely associated with bonsai in the United States. It asks very little of its keeper, an untroublesome plant, and that is why it suits someone taking on a first tree. The scale-like foliage stays green through winter. Keep it outdoors and pinch back new growth to hold the silhouette.

Nana Juniper (Japanese Garden Juniper) bonsai care

Indoor / outdoor: Outdoor only: a juniper cannot live inside the house
Light: Full sun; at least half a day of it
Water: Let the soil dry slightly before watering, but never let it dry out completely; it dislikes wet soil
USDA zones: 4 to 9 in the ground; no source gives a zone for a pot
Main risks: Main risks, not ranked by any source: wet soil and root rot; life inside the house
