About this Juniper Bonsai, Upright, 5 Years Old (Juniperus procumbens 'Nana')
Trained as an upright rather than in the low, spreading shape the cultivar takes naturally, this 5-year-old stands 6 to 7 inches and shows a clear trunk line from soil to apex. Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' is a dwarf juniper of Japanese origin and the evergreen most closely associated with bonsai in the United States. It asks very little of its keeper, an untroublesome plant, and that is why it suits someone taking on a first tree. The scale-like foliage stays green through winter. Keep it outdoors and pinch back new growth to hold the silhouette.
