20 years of development stand behind this trained Juniperus procumbens 'Nana', a compact specimen of 9 by 15 inches and 14 inches in height. The dwarf juniper reached the West from Japan and remains the most widely grown evergreen for bonsai in the United States, chiefly because it is tough, durable over decades and forgiving of conditions many species will not tolerate. At this modest size it suits a bench or a small outdoor display area, and outdoors is where it must live. Regular shearing keeps the foliage pads compact as the tree matures.
