This is the dwarf Japanese juniper, Juniperus procumbens 'Nana', 29 years old at 14 by 19 by 17 inches tall and grown in a trained style. No evergreen is more widely planted for bonsai in the United States, and for most people it is the plant that comes to mind when the word bonsai is used at all. The reasons are practical rather than sentimental: it is hardy, it lives a very long time, and it puts up with conditions that would defeat fussier material. Its place is outdoors.
