12 years old and 12 to 13 inches tall, this Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' has been planted on a rock slab so that roots and stone are read together as a single landscape. The dwarf juniper reached the United States from Japan and has become the most widely grown evergreen in the craft here, prized for its long life and for a constitution that puts up with a great deal. That reliability, more than anything else, is why it is so often recommended to beginners. Keep it outdoors the year round, where light and cold both do their work.
