Roughly 10 years of cultivation stands behind this 11- to 12-inch Juniperus procumbens 'Nana', and the difference shows in the thickness of the trunk and the density of the foliage. The dwarf Japanese juniper is grown across the United States more widely than any other bonsai species, being hardy, long-lived, and tolerant of situations many plants resent. At this size there is genuine structure to work with: branch placement is settled, so refinement takes over from basic shaping. Site it outdoors in strong light, in a coarse open substrate, watering as the surface begins to dry.
