About this Flowering Tropical Red Formosa Azalea Bonsai, 8 Years Old (Azalea indica)
A tropical azalea, Azalea indica 'Formosa', at 8 years old and 14 to 15 inches in height. The flowers are large and openly displayed, a brilliant red that leans toward fuchsia at close range, and they read strongly against the dark evergreen foliage behind them. This is a tree meant to be placed where the bloom can be seen rather than tucked into a corner. Between flowering periods the glossy leaves keep the outline dense and well furnished.
Satsuki Azalea bonsai care
This is a living Satsuki Azalea (Rhododendron indicum). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor — needs a real winter dormancy and cannot live indoors year-round
- Light
- Full sun to bright dappled shade; protect from harsh afternoon sun, especially in summer and around bloom time
- Water
- Moist — never bone-dry, but never waterlogged. Hates both extremes. Use soft/rainwater; dislikes hard, alkaline tap water
- USDA zones
- 6–9 (most cultivars hardy to roughly 0°F / -18°C; some to -10°F)
- #1 cause of death
- Root rot from overwatering / poorly draining or non-acidic soil
