About this Flowering Tropical Purple Formosa Azalea Bonsai, 8 Years Old (Azalea indica)
The lavender flowers of Azalea indica 'Formosa' are large and conspicuous, thrown into relief by dark evergreen leaves. This one has been grown for 8 years and now reaches 12 to 13 inches. Treated as a tropical azalea, it is kept warm and away from frost. Like others in the genus it appreciates a lime-free, moisture-retentive compost, water that is not too hard, and a little shade during the hottest part of the day. Faded blooms can be picked off as they go over, and any shaping cuts are best made once flowering has finished.
Satsuki Azalea bonsai care
This is a living Satsuki Azalea (Rhododendron indicum). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

- Outdoor — needs a real winter dormancy and cannot live indoors year-round
- Light
- Full sun to bright dappled shade; protect from harsh afternoon sun, especially in summer and around bloom time
- Water
- Moist — never bone-dry, but never waterlogged. Hates both extremes. Use soft/rainwater; dislikes hard, alkaline tap water
- USDA zones
- 6–9 (most cultivars hardy to roughly 0°F / -18°C; some to -10°F)
- #1 cause of death
- Root rot from overwatering / poorly draining or non-acidic soil
