About this Flowering Chinzan Azalea Bonsai, 15 Years Old, 14 Inches Tall (Azalea satsuki)
Satsuki azalea 'Chinzan' is a naturally dwarf, tight-growing evergreen with small glossy leaves that come to a point. Where most azaleas flower in early spring, Chinzan waits until May and June and then covers itself in deep pink blooms, and it will do so even in a shaded position. This plant is 15 years old, 14 inches tall and 18 inches across in both directions. Care outdoors is straightforward, and like other satsuki it does best in an acid, free-draining soil.
Satsuki Azalea bonsai care
This is a living Satsuki Azalea (Rhododendron indicum). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor — needs a real winter dormancy and cannot live indoors year-round
- Light
- Full sun to bright dappled shade; protect from harsh afternoon sun, especially in summer and around bloom time
- Water
- Moist — never bone-dry, but never waterlogged. Hates both extremes. Use soft/rainwater; dislikes hard, alkaline tap water
- USDA zones
- 6–9 (most cultivars hardy to roughly 0°F / -18°C; some to -10°F)
- #1 cause of death
- Root rot from overwatering / poorly draining or non-acidic soil
