About this Flowering Azalea Bonsai, 10 Years Old (Azalea japonica 'Sachsenstern')
'Sachsenstern' is an Azalea japonica selection that flowers in May, opening white petals finished with a clear red edge, so it frequently comes into bloom around Mother's Day. This plant has been in training for 10 years and measures 11 to 12 inches in height. It is described as hardy, and like other azaleas it appreciates an open, acidic compost and water that is low in lime. Kept indoors, it does best in the brightest position available short of harsh midday glare, with spent blooms removed once they have gone over.

This is a living Satsuki Azalea (Rhododendron indicum). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

- Outdoor — needs a real winter dormancy and cannot live indoors year-round

- Full sun to bright dappled shade; protect from harsh afternoon sun, especially in summer and around bloom time
- Water
- Moist — never bone-dry, but never waterlogged. Hates both extremes. Use soft/rainwater; dislikes hard, alkaline tap water
- USDA zones
- 6–9 (most cultivars hardy to roughly 0°F / -18°C; some to -10°F)
- #1 cause of death
- Root rot from overwatering / poorly draining or non-acidic soil
