About this Medium Flowering Fukien Tea Bonsai, Upright, 12 Years Old (Ehretia microphylla)
12 years old, with a height of 9 to 10 inches, this Fukien tea has been grown as an aged upright. Ehretia microphylla is a Chinese species from Fujian, and it carries dark green leaves of very small size. Its flowering is unpredictable in the best sense, since the little white blossoms can appear in any month; each one that sets turns into a red berry which darkens steadily as it ripens. The tree appreciates heat and is kept indoors.
Fukien Tea bonsai care
This is a living Fukien Tea (Ehretia microphylla). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Indoor: traditionally an indoor bonsai, listed for indoor bonsai by Montreal Botanical Garden; outdoors in summer while nights stay warm
- Light
- Sources differ: lots of light right next to a window; full sun; good light but little direct sun
- Water
- Keep evenly moist, never waterlogged; water as the surface dries; let the surface dry a little in winter
- USDA zones
- 10 to 12 in the ground (Plants for a Future, quoted by the Hawaii weed risk assessment); a potted tree comes indoors below about 55 to 60°F (13 to 15°C)
- Main risks
- Main risks, not ranked by any source: cold and sudden changes, soggy or poorly drained soil, too little light and dry winter air
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Fukien Tea bonsai care guide.
