About this Large Flowering Fukien Tea Group Bonsai, Three Tree Forest, 12 Years Old (Ehretia microphylla)

Three Fukien tea trees, each 12 years old and 9 to 11 inches tall, planted together as a forest group. Ehretia microphylla comes from the Fujan province of China and carries small, dark green foliage on fine twiggy growth. White flowers can appear at almost any point in the year, and each one gives way to a red berry that darkens as it ages. The species loves heat and does very well indoors. A group planting of this kind reads as a small stand of trees rather than a single specimen, so keep the inner branches open to light.

Indoor: traditionally an indoor bonsai, listed for indoor bonsai by Montreal Botanical Garden; outdoors in summer while nights stay warm

Sources differ: lots of light right next to a window; full sun; good light but little direct sun

Keep evenly moist, never waterlogged; water as the surface dries; let the surface dry a little in winter
USDA zones
13 in a pot: only zone 13's winter lows of 60 to 70°F (16 to 21°C) stay at or above the 54°F (12°C) it should not stay below for any length of time. In the ground: 10 to 12 (Plants for a Future, quoted by the Hawaii weed risk assessment); a potted tree comes indoors below about 55 to 60°F (13 to 15°C)
