About this Flowering Chinzan Azalea Bonsai, 15 Years Old, 12 Inches Tall (Azalea satsuki)
A 15-year-old satsuki azalea of the 'Chinzan' selection, 12 inches tall with a 16 by 19 inch spread. The habit is compact and dwarf, the small evergreen leaves shiny and pointed. Flowering comes later than in most azaleas, arriving through May and June rather than early spring, and the deep pink display is prolific enough to obscure much of the foliage; shade does not prevent it. Outdoor care is undemanding, and the plant holds its leaves right through the winter.
Satsuki Azalea bonsai care
This is a living Satsuki Azalea (Rhododendron indicum). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor — needs a real winter dormancy and cannot live indoors year-round
- Light
- Full sun to bright dappled shade; protect from harsh afternoon sun, especially in summer and around bloom time
- Water
- Moist — never bone-dry, but never waterlogged. Hates both extremes. Use soft/rainwater; dislikes hard, alkaline tap water
- USDA zones
- 6–9 (most cultivars hardy to roughly 0°F / -18°C; some to -10°F)
- #1 cause of death
- Root rot from overwatering / poorly draining or non-acidic soil
