About this Large Chinese Seiju Elm Bonsai, 9 Years Old (Ulmus parvifolia)

'Seiju' is a dwarf selection of Ulmus parvifolia, the Chinese or lacebark elm, a deciduous tree of China, Korea and Japan that naturally forms a rounded crown. Its leaves are elliptic, toothed and glossy dark green, and the bark mottles attractively as the trunk thickens. Small reddish flowers appear in late summer, with seed following in autumn. The species is noted for its resistance to Dutch elm disease. This example is 9 years old and measures 13 to 15 inches. Grow it outdoors, where the annual cycle of leaf fall and regrowth can run its course.
