About this Small Chinese Seiju Elm Bonsai, 8 Years Old (Ulmus parvifolia)
Ulmus parvifolia comes from China, Korea and Japan, and goes by the names Chinese elm and lacebark elm; left alone it develops a rounded crown, and it is notably resistant to Dutch elm disease. The leaves are elliptic, toothed and glossy dark green, and the bark becomes mottled as the trunk ages. Small reddish flowers come in late summer, followed by seed in the fall. The 'Seiju' selection is a dwarf one, chiefly grown for rock work, and this 8-year-old at 12 to 13 inches shows the shortened internodes that follow from it. Deciduous; grow it outdoors.
