About this Small Chinese Elm Curve Trunk Bonsai, Trained, 8 Years Old (Ulmus parvifolia)

8 years old and standing 10 to 11 inches, this Ulmus parvifolia has been trained over that time into the traditional curved trunk style, the line sweeping rather than upright. Chinese elm is a hardy species with small evergreen foliage, and its habit of producing fine, well-divided branching is the reason it remains a mainstay of the art. Regular pinching through the growing season keeps the twigs short and the profile crisp. It is suited to indoor growing.

Chinese Elm bonsai care

This is a living Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

Indoor / outdoor
Outdoor preferred for strongest growth; can adapt indoors with very bright light
Light
Full sun outdoors; brightest possible window indoors
Water
Let the topsoil dry slightly, then water thoroughly — dislikes both constant wet and prolonged drought. Middle-of-the-road, leaning slightly toward "let dry between waterings."
USDA zones
4–9 (one of the most adaptable elms; resistant to Dutch elm disease)
#1 cause of death
Overwatering and root rot (especially indoors)

Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Chinese Elm bonsai care guide.
