About this Chinese Elm Bonsai, Root Over Rock (Ulmus parvifolia)
Thirty-eight years of growth have produced this 12 by 16 by 25 inch Ulmus parvifolia, trained in the root over rock manner so that the roots grip a stone before entering the soil of its 10-inch Aztec orange container. The style takes decades to convince, since the roots must thicken against the rock rather than around it. Chinese elm carries small serrated leaves and divides freely, giving the fine branching the style depends on. It keeps well indoors in warmth and good light.
