A young Eugenia myrtifolia, 3 years old and 7 to 9 inches tall, offered as pre-bonsai for anyone who would rather build a tree than buy one already finished. Brush cherry sets small, firm leaves on a naturally dense framework, which is what recommends it for training at this modest scale, and mature plants flower. Nothing has been committed to yet: the trunk is still slim enough to bend and the first structural cuts belong to the buyer. Keep it indoors in good light and pinch back the new growth to build ramification.

This is a living Brush Cherry (Syzygium paniculatum). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

Indoor / outdoor
Indoor in winter, in a greenhouse or the house; outside in a sheltered spot in warm weather. Herons keeps it as an indoor tree
Light
Sunny and warm; it can take full sun, with partial shade in the hottest areas; Yorkshire Bonsai adds afternoon shade in heat
Water
Water thoroughly once the soil surface starts to dry, but never let the inner rootball dry out; generously in summer, less in winter. Rainwater if your tap water is hard
USDA zones
12 to 13 in a pot: zone 12's winter lows of 50 to 60°F (10 to 16°C) only just meet Yorkshire Bonsai's 50°F (10°C) minimum, so bring it in on cold nights there; zone 13's lows of 60 to 70°F (16 to 21°C) clear it and match Phoenix Bonsai's preferred 59 to 64°F (15 to 18°C). In the ground UF/IFAS gives 10 to 11 and Phoenix Bonsai 10b and 11
