About this Medium Pre Baby Jade Bonsai, 5 Years Old (Portulacaria afra)
Portulacaria afra at 5 years, 10 inches tall, and still at the pre-bonsai stage. Baby jade is a succulent rather than a woody tree, storing water in its plump little leaves and in the trunk itself, which thickens quickly and takes on a convincingly barked appearance with time. That vigour makes it unusually tolerant of the trial and error of early training, and prunings root without much ceremony. Indoors it wants the brightest window available and a gritty soil mix that dries out properly between waterings, since standing wet is the one thing it will not forgive.
