About this Medium Baby Jade Bonsai, 5 Years Old (Portulacaria afra)

5 years old and 9 inches tall, this Portulacaria afra is a succulent rather than a woody tree, known in its native South Africa as the elephant bush. Its leaves are pale green and almost round, roughly a third the size of those on the common jade plant, while trunk, branches and foliage alike hold water in reserve. That reserve makes timing less critical than with most bonsai, since the soil should be allowed to dry between waterings. It grows well in a home or office wherever the light is bright.
