About this Japanese Beech Bonsai, 34 Years Old (Fagus crenata)

34 years old, 22" x 24" x 26" tall The Japanese Beech is a beautiful and highly prized species for bonsai, known for its smooth, silvery-gray bark, elegant branching structure, and delicate green leaves. Native to the mountainous forests of Japan, this deciduous beech develops a refined, natural appearance as it matures, with attractive golden-yellow to coppery foliage in autumn. Keep outdoors.

Outdoor bonsai care

We don’t have a species care guide for this tree yet, so here is what holds true for any outdoor bonsai, start here and adjust as you learn the plant:

Light
Outdoors year-round in full sun unless the species specifically wants shade. Outdoor species decline indoors.
Water
Check daily in the growing season, a pot in summer sun can go from moist to bone dry in a day.
Winter
The roots in the pot are far more exposed than roots in the ground. Protect them before the first hard freeze.
Soil
Free-draining and gritty. Standard potting compost holds too much water and suffocates roots.

Read the overwintering guide, how to water a bonsai, and diagnose a problem by symptom if something looks wrong. You can also browse the species we do have care guides for.

Everything this tree needs

Most trees that die in their first year die of the same three things: the wrong soil, a blunt cut, or being left to guess. These cover all three.

Your tree arrives potted. For a humidity tray under it, or a new pot when it is time to repot, add one to the same order: ceramic, mica and unglazed pots and drip trays.
