About this Large Flowering Mount Fuji Serissa Bonsai with Raised Roots, 17 Years Old (Serissa foetida)

At 17 years old and 14 to 15 inches, this is a substantial example of the Mount Fuji Serissa. Its roots have been lifted clear of the soil over successive repottings, a technique that lends the base of the trunk a gnarled, long-established look. Serissa foetida is a subtropical evergreen with variegated leaves, imported from Japan, and it flowers heavily in small white stars. It asks little in the way of upkeep indoors and remains forgiving enough that a beginner can take it on with confidence.

Serissa / Snow Rose bonsai care

This is a living Serissa / Snow Rose (Serissa japonica). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

Indoor / outdoor: Indoor: indoors from fall to spring, ideally all year per Yorkshire Bonsai; outside in summer only while nights stay above 50°F (10°C)
Light: Sources differ: a sunny, wind-protected place outside; indoors bright but not too sunny, such as an east or west window; as a garden shrub, partial sun to partial shade with morning sun
Water: Keep the rootball moist without overwatering and never let it dry out completely; Bonsai4Me waits until the compost has nearly dried; it rots in waterlogged soil
USDA zones: 11 to 12 in a pot: zone 12's winter lows of 50 to 60°F (10 to 16°C) stay above the bonsai floor of 45 to 50°F (7 to 10°C), zone 11's lows of 40 to 50°F (4 to 10°C) come close to it, so bring it in on colder nights there. In the ground NC State gives 7 to 11 and UF/IFAS 7 to 9
