20 years of cultivation lie behind this Ligustrum lucidum, 12 to 14 inches tall and trained with a curved trunk that draws the eye up through the canopy. The glossy privet grows wild through China and across eastern Asia, and American gardeners have long planted it ornamentally; it takes shearing well and stays in leaf the year round. Established trees carry clusters of small white bloom from the closing weeks of spring into the first of the summer. It does well indoors in a bright position, given even watering and a trim whenever shoots run past the intended outline.
