About this Baby Jade Variegated Bonsai, 29 Years Old (Portulacaria afra 'Variegata')
Nearly 30 years in the making, this variegated Portulacaria afra is 29 years old and measures 14 by 15 inches with a height of 19 inches. The elephant bush is a South African succulent rather than a true tree, and its rounded leaves reach no more than a third of the size found on a common jade; trunk, branches and foliage all serve as water storage. It is grown indoors, where warmth and strong light suit it. Being a succulent, it prefers soil that dries appreciably between waterings rather than constant moisture.
