About this Baby Jade Variegated Bonsai, 29 Years Old (Portulacaria afra 'Variegata')

Nearly 30 years in the making, this variegated Portulacaria afra is 29 years old and measures 14 by 15 inches with a height of 19 inches. The elephant bush is a South African succulent rather than a true tree, and its rounded leaves reach no more than a third of the size found on a common jade; trunk, branches and foliage all serve as water storage. It is grown indoors, where warmth and strong light suit it. Being a succulent, it prefers soil that dries appreciably between waterings rather than constant moisture.

Dwarf Jade / Elephant Bush bonsai care

This is a living Dwarf Jade / Elephant Bush (Portulacaria afra). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

Indoor / outdoor: Indoor-capable: an indoor tree in most temperate zones; outdoors in summer, back in when nights fall below 40°F (4°C)
Light: Bright light; does best with at least 4 hours of direct sun; a south window indoors
Water: Dry side: drought tolerant in the ground, but in a pot water when the soil has nearly dried, which can mean every few days in summer heat
USDA zones: 9 to 11; indoors in colder zones
Main risks: Main risks, not ranked by any source: root rot in soil that stays wet, and cold

Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Dwarf Jade / Elephant Bush bonsai care guide.
