About this Baby Jade Variegated Bonsai, 23 Years Old (Portulacaria afra 'Variegata')
Portulacaria afra variegata, 23 years old, 13 by 15 inches and 20 inches tall. Known in its native South Africa as the elephant bush, this succulent stores water in its fleshy trunk, branches and nearly round leaves, the last running to roughly a third the size of a common jade's and carrying variegation. That water-holding habit makes it tolerant of irregular watering, and it performs well as an indoor bonsai given a bright position. More than 20 years of growth have given the trunk real substance.
