About this Large Baby Jade Variegated Bonsai, 15 Years Old (Portulacaria afra 'Variegata')
15 years old and 11 to 12 inches tall, this variegated form of Portulacaria afra is a succulent from South Africa, known in its homeland as the Elephant Bush. The nearly round leaves measure roughly a third the size of those on the common jade plant, and the variegated form the cultivar is named for is uncommon in the trade. Trunk, branches and foliage are all fleshy, serving as water storage for the plant. It settles readily into home or office conditions and makes an excellent indoor subject.
