About this Baby Jade Bonsai, 18 Years Old, 21 Inches Tall (Portulacaria afra)
An 18-year-old baby jade standing 21 inches tall with a 13 by 14 inch spread. Though grown as a bonsai it is not a tree at all but a South African succulent, Portulacaria afra, called elephant bush in its homeland. Water is held in the swollen trunk, in the branches and in the small rounded leaves, which are pale green and roughly one third the size of a common jade leaf. Indoors it performs very well, and it much prefers to dry out between waterings rather than sit damp.
