Portulacaria afra, the Elephant Bush, is a South African succulent whose leaves are pale green, almost circular, and roughly a third the size of those on the common jade plant. Reserves are held in its swollen trunk, in the branches and in the leaves themselves, so the plant is patient about watering intervals. This one is 5 years old and 10 to 11 inches tall, set in a land and water container with scalloped edges, a well occupying the far side of the planting. It suits either a home or an office wherever bright light can be given.
