About this Redwood Bonsai, Trained, 14 Years Old (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)
14 years of training have gone into this dawn redwood, which now measures 26 inches in height across a 21 by 23 inch spread. Metasequoia glyptostroboides was rediscovered in the 1940s after being counted among extinct genera, and seed arrived in American collections in 1948. A genuine redwood and a native of Manchuria in China, it persists as a remnant of forests that were once vast. The soft foliage colors and falls each autumn, so the branch structure carries the tree through winter. Grow it outside.

- Strongly water-loving — tolerates wet feet far better than most conifers; never let it dry out

- #1 cause of death
- Letting the rootball dry out (especially in summer); root rot is possible but far less likely than in other conifers
