About this Redwood Group Bonsai, Three Tree Forest, 8 Years Old (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)
Three dawn redwoods, each between 5 and 8 years old and 15 to 16 inches high, are planted together here as a forest group. Set at differing thicknesses, trunks of this kind read as a stand rather than as three separate trees, which suits a species that grew in great forests before it disappeared from the record. Metasequoia glyptostroboides was believed extinct until living examples turned up in Manchuria, China, during the 1940s; it is a true redwood. Grow the composition outdoors, where the fine summer foliage and the bare winter trunks each have their season.
