About this Redwood Bonsai, Coiled Trunk, 13 Years Old (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)
Metasequoia glyptostroboides, the dawn redwood, is the most interesting member of its group. Known only from fossils until living stands were found in Manchuria, China during the 1940s, it is a true redwood and survives as a relic of forests that once covered vast areas. Seed reached the United States in 1948. This 13-year-old tree has been worked in the coiled trunk style and stands 19 inches tall on a 12 by 11 inch base. Like all dawn redwoods it is a deciduous conifer and is grown outdoors.

This is a living Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

- Full sun for vigorous, healthy growth; light afternoon shade only in extreme heat

- Strongly water-loving — tolerates wet feet far better than most conifers; never let it dry out

- 4a–8b (some cultivars to zone 9)
- #1 cause of death
- Letting the rootball dry out (especially in summer); root rot is possible but far less likely than in other conifers
