About this Redwood Bonsai, 5 Years Old (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)
5 years of growth have brought this dawn redwood to 15 or 16 inches. The species comes from Manchuria in China and was known only from fossil remains until living stands were found in the 1940s; seed reached the United States in 1948. It is a true redwood, and the last survivor of a lineage that once formed vast forests. Its foliage is soft and feathery, shed each autumn in the manner of a few unusual conifers, so the tree is grown outdoors where the straight, tapering trunk and rising branch structure can be read through every season.
