About this Redwood 5 Group Bonsai, Five Tree Forest, 8 Years Old (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)

Five Metasequoia glyptostroboides, between 5 and 8 years old and 22 inches tall, grown together as a group. The dawn redwood stands apart from the rest of its group, a native of Manchuria in China that was believed extinct until living trees were found again during the 1940s. It belongs to the true redwoods and survives as a fossil species, left stranded after the enormous forests of its kind disappeared. Unlike its evergreen relatives it sheds its needles each autumn. An outdoor tree, and one whose straight, tapering trunks suit forest work particularly well.

Dawn Redwood bonsai care

This is a living Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

Indoor / outdoor
Outdoor only: Yorkshire Bonsai calls a permanent place in a heated home unsuitable; Mistral overwinters it outdoors with frost protection; Bonsaiwonder keeps it outdoors, using an unheated greenhouse or foil tent below 32°F (0°C)
Light
Full sun; bonsai growers screen it from the strongest summer heat, Yorkshire Bonsai in the afternoon
Water
Keep the soil evenly moist through the growing season; how often differs by source; never let it stay soggy
USDA zones
4 to 8 in the ground; UF/IFAS gives 5A to 8B, and the Gymnosperm Database and Oklahoma State give zone 5 as the limit; no source gives a zone for a pot
Main risks
Main risks, not ranked by any source: a rootball that dries out; soggy soil and mold; hard frost on an unprotected pot

Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Dawn Redwood bonsai care guide.

Everything this tree needs

Most trees that die in their first year die of the same three things: the wrong soil, a blunt cut, or being left to guess. These cover all three.
