About this Mikawa Yatsubusa Japanese Maple Bonsai, Trained, 31 Years Old (Acer palmatum)
31 years of cultivation show in this trained Mikawa Yatsubusa, which has reached 30 inches in height on a 10 by 15 inch base. The graft union and the trunk beneath carry the weight of that age, while above them the compact cultivar does what it always does: countless short branches bearing green leaves in overlapping ranks until the head becomes a solid rounded shape. Red colour follows late in the season. Hardy and simple to grow, this maple lives outdoors.
Japanese Maple bonsai care
This is a living Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor only, all year
- Light
- A sunny, airy place; dappled shade in hot weather; indirect light once temperatures reach 85°F (29°C)
- Water
- Evenly moist: water daily in the growing season; it must not dry out completely
- USDA zones
- 5 to 8; not every cultivar is fully hardy in zone 5
- Main risks
- Main risks, not ranked by any source: verticillium wilt, which cannot be treated and spreads on tools; drying out, which damages fine roots
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Japanese Maple bonsai care guide.
