About this Small Japanese Red Maple Bonsai, 9 Years Old (Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum')
Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' at 9 years, 12 to 14 inches tall, carrying the red leaf colour the cultivar is grown for. Its foliage takes the finely dissected palmette form of the famous Japanese maple, cut deeply enough that each leaf opens like the palm of a hand. On a patio, deck, balcony or in the garden it lends a soft, delicate texture that conifers cannot supply. Being deciduous, it drops its leaves and shows the bare branch structure through winter, and it should be kept outdoors throughout the year.
