About this Mikawa Yatsubusa Japanese Maple Bonsai, Trained, 26 Years Old, 22 Inches Tall (Acer palmatum)
26 years of training lie behind this Acer palmatum 'Mikawa Yatsubusa', now 9 by 16 inches with a height of 22 inches. Long cultivation shows in the trunk, which has thickened and gained character while the grafted top has stayed tight and much divided. Summer foliage is green and so closely layered that the crown appears solid; in autumn it turns a brilliant red. The overall form is sculptural and close to spherical. Hardy and simple to care for, the tree is kept outside, with repotting best done in early spring before the buds move.
