About this Mikawa Yatsubusa Japanese Maple Bonsai, Trained, 25 Years Old (Acer palmatum)
25 years old and trained, this grafted Acer palmatum 'Mikawa Yatsubusa' occupies 10 by 16 inches and reaches 27 inches, tall in relation to its footprint. The cultivar's defining trait is its leaf arrangement: the green leaves sit so close together that they lap over one another like roof tiles, and the resulting cover is unusually solid for a maple. Autumn turns that mass a fiery red. The multi-branched structure builds toward a sculptural, nearly spherical crown. Hardy and undemanding, it is kept outdoors, where the change of season shows to best effect.
