About this Mikawa Yatsubusa Japanese Maple Bonsai, 24 Years Old, 23 Inches Tall (Acer palmatum)
24 years of growth stand behind this grafted Mikawa Yatsubusa maple, now 12 by 17 inches across and 23 inches in height. The cultivar is naturally compact and throws many small branches, so the green leaves gather into a crowded, overlapping cover that gives the crown its rounded, sculptural mass. Autumn turns that cover a vivid scarlet for several weeks before the tree goes bare. Acer palmatum of this type is hardy and undemanding, and it should live outdoors where it can follow the seasons properly.

This is a living Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor only — it requires a genuine winter dormancy and will decline indoors
- Light
- Full morning sun with light afternoon shade in summer; protect foliage above ~85 °F (30 °C) to prevent leaf scorch
- Water
- Keep evenly and consistently moist — never let the rootball dry out, but do not leave it waterlogged. On the "wet" side of the spectrum.
- USDA zones
- 5–8 (some cultivars tolerate 9; protect roots below zone 6 in containers)
- #1 cause of death
- Verticillium wilt (often introduced by dirty tools / summer pruning); also leaf scorch and root drying
