A grafted Mikawa Yatsubusa maple of 24 years, 9 by 16 inches and 22 inches tall. Its green leaves are set very close along the shoots and lap over one another to build the solid, nearly spherical head that distinguishes this compact, multi-branched cultivar from ordinary Acer palmatum. In autumn the color deepens to a fiery red that carries across a garden. The tree is hardy and easy enough to grow, and it lives outdoors permanently; light summer shade helps guard the foliage against scorch.
