About this Mikawa Yatsubusa Japanese Maple Bonsai, 20 Years Old, 18 Inches Tall (Acer palmatum)
20 years old, 13 by 12 inches and 18 inches tall, a low and spreading interpretation of Acer palmatum 'Mikawa Yatsubusa'. This grafted dwarf cultivar carries a great many small branches, and its green leaves sit so tightly along them that the canopy reads as one continuous surface rather than a scatter of separate leaves. Come autumn the color turns to a strong fiery red. The tree is hardy, undemanding by maple standards and suited to outdoor display, where morning sun with afternoon shelter keeps the foliage in good condition.

This is a living Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor only — it requires a genuine winter dormancy and will decline indoors
- Light
- Full morning sun with light afternoon shade in summer; protect foliage above ~85 °F (30 °C) to prevent leaf scorch
- Water
- Keep evenly and consistently moist — never let the rootball dry out, but do not leave it waterlogged. On the "wet" side of the spectrum.
- USDA zones
- 5–8 (some cultivars tolerate 9; protect roots below zone 6 in containers)
- #1 cause of death
- Verticillium wilt (often introduced by dirty tools / summer pruning); also leaf scorch and root drying
