About this Japanese White Pine Bonsai, 36 Years Old (Pinus parviflora 'Bergman')

36 years of age, 13 by 20 inches and 27 inches tall: a Pinus parviflora 'Bergman', the Japanese white pine. The foliage carries a strong blue cast and the needles curve attractively, a combination that has long recommended this cultivar for bonsai. Growth is dense and notably slow, which is precisely what one wants in a specimen meant to hold its shape for years. Cones are medium in size. A hardy evergreen, it is kept outdoors through the winter. Japanese white pine is conventionally grown in full sun with free-draining soil.

Japanese White Pine bonsai care

This is a living Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

Indoor / outdoor
Strictly outdoor. It needs full seasons, including a genuine winter dormancy, and will decline indoors
Light
Full sun. More sun produces shorter needles, denser foliage and better color
Water
DRY. One of the driest of all bonsai. Water thoroughly, then let it dry appreciably before watering again; never keep it wet
USDA zones
Roughly 4b to 7 (some sources cite 5 to 9); reliably hardy to about -20°F (-29°C) when fully acclimated
#1 cause of death
Root rot from overwatering / water-retentive soil, made worse on trees grown on their own roots

Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Japanese White Pine bonsai care guide.
