About this Japanese White Pine Bonsai, 32 Years Old (Pinus parviflora 'Bergman')
32 years of growth stand behind this Japanese white pine, a 'Bergman' selection reaching 26 inches tall over a 13 by 19 inch spread. The cultivar is known for needles that curve softly and carry a strong blue tone, and for the tight, congested habit that follows from its very slow rate of extension. Cones are medium in size. Being fully hardy, the tree should live outside through every season rather than being brought indoors, and its restrained vigor makes the finished outline easy to hold.

This is a living Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

- Strictly outdoor. It needs full seasons, including a genuine winter dormancy, and will decline indoors

- Full sun. More sun produces shorter needles, denser foliage and better color

- DRY. One of the driest of all bonsai. Water thoroughly, then let it dry appreciably before watering again; never keep it wet
- USDA zones
- Roughly 4b–7 (some sources cite 5–9); reliably hardy to about -20°F (-29°C) when fully acclimated

- Root rot from overwatering / water-retentive soil — made worse on trees grown on their own roots
