About this Japanese White Pine Bonsai, 34 Years Old (Pinus parviflora 'Bergman')

Pinus parviflora 'Bergman' is prized for the blue cast of its foliage and for the gentle curve each needle takes. Growth is slow and the habit dense, which is precisely what makes the cultivar such a useful bonsai subject; the cones it sets are of medium size. This tree has been in cultivation for 34 years and now rises 27 inches from a 13 by 15 inch footprint. A hardy evergreen, it belongs outdoors the year round, where a proper cold dormancy keeps it in good health.

Japanese White Pine bonsai care

This is a living Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

Indoor / outdoor
Strictly outdoor. It needs full seasons, including a genuine winter dormancy, and will decline indoors
Light
Full sun. More sun produces shorter needles, denser foliage and better color
Water
DRY. One of the driest of all bonsai. Water thoroughly, then let it dry appreciably before watering again; never keep it wet
USDA zones
Roughly 4b–7 (some sources cite 5–9); reliably hardy to about -20°F (-29°C) when fully acclimated
#1 cause of death
Root rot from overwatering / water-retentive soil — made worse on trees grown on their own roots

Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Japanese White Pine bonsai care guide.
